Continue Healing Water

In the novel, Healing Water, the author’s Joyce Moyer Hostetter tells the life story about the main character who lives in Hawaii. Pia was a young boy who was forced to separate from his o’hana, and he struggled in Moloka’i. The first time I saw the book name, I also thought of that book to heal people, and when I read the novel I did not understand what was going on. Until I finished reading the book I felt so satisfied. I really enjoy reading the book, and I also agreed with the author in the end because the story showed the current status of this time. I could understand when the disease was contagious, and people moved to different places for the rest of their life. In my opinion, I think that book was easy to read, and it is a good story for college students to learn. The book has a strong relationship, and many people help each other, the way people treat everyone, teach some lessons to forgive, the emotion for human change, and show sacrifice. The story shows that love is stronger than revenge, and makes sense someone understands more than to read the book. When I read pages 198 Father Damien cleaning Pia’s foot I think this book shows the healing water here. Father Damien was very important in this book because he even did not care about himself. He had more than healed that “Healing Water” refreshed the problem inside Pia. Father Damien seemed like a Buddha to make everyone change their mind and became a good person.

The book also made me miss my friend when I was high school. Like Pia, I was so frustrated with my friend because she told the teacher my best friend fraud in the examination that made my best friend have zero and clean restroom after class. After that, I did not forgive her and talk with her for a long time. I even avoided her when she added me on Facebook, or she tried to connect with me. Now, I will forgive her and made-up friends with her. I thought the story influenced me and helped me change in a good way.

The ending of the novel was awesome because Pia and Kamaka were made-up o’hana again. The author described forgiving to help everyone have a peaceful life, and true love is stronger to help people closer together. In my opinion, I hope the author will write more because the novel has some characters such as Ah Loy, Malia, Maka Nui, and some new people Piolani, Pita to arrive. Father Damien built the church and the market in Moloka’i, Kamaka and Pia grow some trees in Pita house, but the author did not tell about bad Albert and George. I hope “Healing Water ” like that name heals people gets well soon after all, and they have lived together happily ever after.

I would like to recommend this novel to my sister in law because she did not go to school at this time, and she has to take care of her baby. I hope when she has free time she can read the book that makes her learn English, and I will be a helper for her to understand that book.

  1. I totally agree with you that healing water the author wants to say is the water Father Damien used to clean Pia’s wounds. I think Father Damien sees something special in Pia, so he seems to take better care of Pia than others 😀 or maybe because Pia is the main character of this novel besides Kamaka ^~^

  2. Really nice post Diep! I have seen such a great improvement in your writing over the semester! Maybe all this blog writing has helped. I agree- Father Damien was such an important character in our novel (and he was such an important character in Hawaiian History). I’m glad the author included him in the story because he was the main reason that Pia finally forgave Kamaka. Father Damien “cleansed” his heart!
